Some of the biggest jackpots in history are up for grabs this weekend as Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots keep growing.

Nobody hit Wednesday's Powerball jackpot, meaning the prize has grown to what could be the fifth-largest jackpot in Powerball game history and the ninth-largest jackpot in U.S. Lottery history. The jackpot stands at an estimated $640 million, or $478.7 million cash value.

This is the highest the Powerball jackpot has been since March 2019.

You can still check your numbers. The winning Powerball numbers drawn Wednesday night, Jan. 13, were: 4, 19, 23, 25, 49 and the Powerball is 14. The Power Play is 2x. The jackpot was at $550 million.

Powerball officials said 10 tickets matched all five white balls to win $1 million. In Wednesday's drawing, more than 3.3 million tickets won prizes ranging from $4 to $2 million, officials said.

The next Powerball drawing will be at 10:59 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16.

The second-largest jackpot in Mega Millions history is up for grabs on Friday after nobody won Tuesday's jackpot. The next Mega Millions drawing, for an estimated $750 million, or $550.6 million cash is at 11 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15.

Mega Millions officials said the winner could earn the honor of being the third-largest lotto prize winner in American history, competing with two previous Powerball winners who hit at $768.4 and $758.7 million.

When are the drawings?

Mega Millions drawings are held Tuesday and Friday at 11 p.m.

What are the chances you'll win?

The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 302,575,350 and the odds of taking home $1 million by getting a match 5 are 1 in 12,607,306. The overall chance of winning any prize is 1 in 24.

How much does it cost?

Mega Millions tickets cost $2 per play.

So if you win the $1 million second-tier prize in Mega Millions, and the Megaplier number drawn is 5, your prize would be $5 million.

Where do you buy tickets?

In Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana (and most other states) you can buy a Mega Millions ticket at local gas stations, convenience stores and supermarkets until 10:45 on drawing night. To find locations, search on the Mega Millions website.

In Kentucky, residents can even purchase tickets online at Kylottery.com

In Ohio, residents can use Lottery Card available in Kroger, Buehler’s Fresh Foods and Giant Eagle stores. It allows Ohio consumers to enter draw games on their phones and get notified and paid electronically if they win.

How do you pick numbers and which ones do you pick?

Players may pick six numbers from two separate pools of numbers. There are five different numbers from 1 to 70 and one number from 1 to 25. Players can also select Easy Pick or Quick Pick and have the numbers auto drawn.

Here's what you need to win:

To win the big all six numbers on your ticket must match the winning numbers. There are a total of nine ways to win a prize in Mega Millions.

  • Match 5 numbers (or 1 to 70) + 1 number (1 to 25) = Jackpot
  • 5 + 0 = $1 million
  • 4 + 1 = $10,000
  • 4 + 0 = $500
  • 3 + 1 = $200
  • 3 + 0 = $10
  • 2 + 1+ $10
  • 1 + 1 = $4
  • 0 + 1 = $2

What do get when you win?

If you hit the big one, there are two options, annuity or cash.

With the annuity option, the prize is paid out as one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments. According to Mega Millions, each payment is 5 percent bigger than the previous one.

The cash option is a one-time, lump-sum payment that is equal to all the cash in the Mega Millions jackpot prize pool.

When are the drawings?

Numbers

Powerball drawings are held Wednesday and Saturday at 11 p.m.

What are the chances that you'll win?

There is a 1 in 24.9 chance of winning a prize when the advertised jackpot is $40 million and it stays the same the larger the pot gets.

How much does it cost?

Powerball costs $2 per play.

In Kentucky, $1 gets you a power play, which will multiply your Powerball winnings, as long as it isn't the jackpot. So if you win $100 and the power play is 3, you win $300.

Where do you buy tickets?

In Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana (and most other states) you can buy a Mega Millions ticket at local gas stations, convenience stores and supermarkets. In Ohio, polls close at 10 p.m.

In Kentucky, players can also get tickets online on the Kentucky Lottery website, www.kylottery.com.

How do you pick numbers and which ones do you pick?

Select five numbers from 1 to 69 for the white balls; then select one number from 1 to 26 for the red Powerball.

Choose your numbers on a play slip or let the lottery terminal randomly pick your numbers.

Here's what you need to win:

Players win a prize by matching one of the nine ways to win:

  • 5 + Powerball = jackpot
  • 5 + no Powerball = $1 million (If you opt for the powerplay, the max prize is $2 million)
  • 4 + Powerball = $50,000
  • 4 + no Powerball = $100
  • 3 + Powerball = $100
  • 3 + no Powerball =$7
  • 2 + Powerball =$7
  • 1 + Powerball = $4
  • 0 + Powerball =$4

What do you get when you win?

A Powerball jackpot winner may choose to receive their prize in 30 payments over 29 years or a lump-sum payment.

If the annuity option is selected, the winner is guaranteed to receive 30 graduated payments over 29 years. The annual payments increase by 5 percent until the 30th and final payment.

The 30 payments added up equal the value of the annuity.

Federal and jurisdictional income taxes apply to both jackpot prize options.

What to do when you win:

Prizes must be claimed in the jurisdiction where the winning ticket was purchased, within a certain number of days.

Players can generally claim a prize up to $600 at any licensed lottery retailer in the jurisdiction where they bought the ticket. Prizes over $600 can be claimed at some lottery offices and at lottery headquarters.

For the third time in under a month, a New Jersey gambler has claimed a progressive jackpot. The latest, an MGM Grand Millions jackpot, came Friday.

The lucky online casino player now has some decisions to make regarding what to do with the good fortune. While the value of the prize isn’t a record-breaker, it’s still a life-changing amount of money.

Details on the MGM Grand Millions jackpot claim

A press release from BetMGM didn’t reveal the identity of the winner, outside of stating the victor was playing the game on the Borgata Casino online platform in NJ. The press release also states that the player wagered $5 on the winning spin.

The Big One Colossal Cash jackpot sat at $717,427.87 at the time. BetMGM says it is one of the largest progressive jackpots it has ever paid out.

“BetMGM is proud to continue to deliver life-changing wins to its players through our in-house, networked progressive jackpot games,” said Matthew Sunderland, VP Gaming, BetMGM. “Players in New Jersey have won prizes of this size for some time and, as we grow, our hope is that players in newly-regulated states will do the same.”

The record for a BetMGM progressive jackpot is $3,266,476.20. A player set that mark in July 2020 on just a $2 wager, also in the Garden State.

The winner of Friday’s prize indicated that at least part of the money would go to paying off a mortgage. That person is just one of multiple lucky winners in NJ lately, though.

An impressive run for NJ gamblers lately

Late last month, a New Jerseyan won nearly a million dollars playing another BetMGM online casino game, MegaJackpots Cleopatra. That prize came on BetMGM Casino, not Borgata Online, though.

Brick-and-mortar gamblers have gotten in on the action in NJ as well. Just last week, a man at the Tropicana Atlantic City won over a million playing a progressive jackpot poker game.

Most online casino platforms in NJ offer some games with progressive jackpots. While these are still games of pure chance, the appealing dynamic is that with each spin in these titles, those jackpots grow larger.

Eventually, someone in the Garden State will become the next winner of a progressive jackpot. If it happens again soon, 2021 will be off to a strong start for NJ gamblers.
